Videography and Media Coverage Rules

Shinjuku Gyoen is a national garden with a long and distinguished history, and it is exists for use by the public. Concordantly, commercial photography and videography is prohibited within the garden.

(Examples of commercial photography and videography)

  • Using the garden as a location to shoot photos or videos for promotional purposes, such as for the creation of promotional materials
  • Taking photos of the garden for use in company or commercial pamphlets, websites, or other visual materials
  • Shooting for-profit videos in the garden (including live streaming, shooting videos to post on YouTube or other video streaming sites, and similar activities)
  • Photographing models for the purpose of selling photos or other related products

However, photography and videography falling under either of the following categories is permitted, provided there is strict compliance with the requirements:
i. Photography or videography whose primary purpose is to inform the general public about Shinjuku Gyoen, including details relating to its nature, history, facilities, and initiatives.
ii. Photography or videography that is recognized as having academic, cultural, or societal significance and whose sole photography/filming location is Shinjuku Gyoen.

If you wish to photograph, record, or create media coverage of the garden, please follow steps (1) and (2) below.
Even in cases where photography or videography falls under (i) or (ii) above and is conducted by a public organization for non-commercial purposes, please cooperate by following steps (1) and (2) below to ensure the proper operation of the garden.

(1) Check the conditions and compliance requirements for photography/videography and media coverage in advance

Please read and understand the following requirements before proceeding to step (2).

(2) Apply for permission

Complete the application form and submit it together with a separate proposal (indicating the purpose of coverage, the publication medium, and the details about Shinjuku Gyoen to be introduced) by email to the following address at least five (5) days (excluding holidays) prior to the desired date of coverage.
*Photography and videography are permitted only during opening hours on days when the garden is open (opening hours vary depending on the season).
