Classification of Roses

There are about 150 wild rose species and more than 30,000 cultivated varieties. Cultivars consist of old garden roses, which were created before 1867, and modern roses, whose creation began with the introduction of the La France variety in 1867. The four major classes of roses are hybrid tea, floribunda, climbing, and miniature. Roses are also classified by their growth habit (bush, shrub, climbing, and miniature), number of petals (single, semi-double, and double), petal shape (rounded, quilled, and semi-quilled), and overall flower shape (high-centered, flat, globular, cupped, quartered, rosette, and pompon).
