Policies, measures and actions on climate change and
environmental protection in the context of COVID-19 recovery.

Response
Emergency measures in the short term (a few months to one year) to address concerns that have directly emerged from the COVID-19 pandemic and may include forced action.
Recovery
Socioeconomic measures in the medium term (one to a few years) with an environmental and climate focus to “build back better” from COVID-19, and usually involves planned, intentional action.
Redesign
Paradigm shifts and measures in the long term (more than a few years to a few decades) toward redesigning current socioeconomic and sociocultural systems to be sustainable and resilient.

    Response Recovery Redesign
    C&D Waste and Circular Economy in Construction Roadmap. Defines more than 150 actions in 24 work areas, to promote recycling, efficiency in the use of construction materials, incorporating principles of Circular Economy throughout the construction industry value chain, in regulation, in public procurement, in the workforce, academia, and in residential selection criteria.

  • Waste management and Circular economy / sustainable production and consumption

    Recovery Redesign
    Development of a Circular Economy Roadmap for Chile. The process, which is ongoing, has involved the participation of more than 150 people across different sectors of society, including business, academia, civil society, and the public sector. The roadmap is expected to be published in the first trimester of 2021. Due to the pandemic, all of the participatory activities have had to be online activities.

  • Waste management and Circular economy / sustainable production and consumption

    Recovery Redesign
    National Strategy for Organic Waste. The country has developed this multi-stakeholder strategy, which aims to increase the valorization of household organic waste, reducing the volume that goes to landfill. The strategy involves action at three levels: household, neighborhoods, and cities.

5.International Cooperation

  • Others

    The COP25 Chilean Presidency, with the support of Euroclima+, is fostering the following projects focused on the Latin America and the Caribbean region:
    - Indigenous Peoples and Climate Change Regional Dialogue: Strengthening collaboration between indigenous communities and governments for ambitious and inclusive climate action
    - Forum of local governments and climate action: experiences, lessons learned and best practices for Latin America and the Caribbean
    - Regional Forum on the Circular Economy and Climate Change
    - A study on the Macroeconomic Implications of the Transition to Circular Economy for Latin America
    - Regional Meeting on Gender and Climate Change for Latin America and the Caribbean
    - Regional science meeting
    - A study on the Interoperability of electric vehicle charging networks and services in the Latin American region
    - Online course on theoretical content of climate change negotiations, designed for young people in Latin America and the Caribbean, interested in the international negotiation process

    Also, the following projects with a global scope will also be carried out by the COP25 Chilean Presidency:
    - 4th IPCC Meeting of Lead Authors of the 6th Assessment Report of the Working Group
    - Technical Workshop for the Advancement of the Negotiation of the Methodological Issues of the Agreement related to the Enhanced Transparency Framework of the Paris Agreement

  • COVID19 recovery and other environmental issues

    Roadmap: Sustainable Management of Plastics – Pacific Alliance. In 2019, the Presidents of the Member Countries of the Pacific Alliance (Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru) on the occasion of the XIV Presidential Summit of this trade bloc, expressed their commitment of continuing the promotion of sustainable development at a regional level, contributing to Agenda 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals. The four Presidents signed the Pacific Alliance Declaration for a Sustainable Management of Plastics. The signing countries committed to work on the analysis and development of initiatives to contribute to a sound management of this kind of waste, including single use plastic regulation, innovation, research and development, education and consumer information, circular economy schemes and blue economy, among other areas. Currently, the Pacific Alliance countries are working in a public private partnership to achieve a roadmap for the implementation of this Declaration.
