In line with Japan’s development policy at the time, people from Fukushima Prefecture and Miyagi Prefecture began arriving here in 1914 to establish settlements. There are still sites with buildings and other features from those days. You might be able to imagine what life was like for these settlers while touring where they cleared the forests, a mark of their history on the land.
You’ll get a strong impression of the relationship between people and nature, where settlers cleared the forests to establish their ways of life, and later worked to reforest them.
*In 1977, the 100 Square-Meter Forest Movement was launched. The Shiretoko Forest Keeper Trail makes its land accessible to the public. For more detailed information about the movement’s activities, please visit the Shiretoko National Park Nature Center or check out its website.
