At Furepe-no-Taki Falls, groundwater flowing from the mountains of Shiretoko seeps from partway down a cliff and tumbles into the sea. The way the cascade drizzles down has earned it the nickname of “Maiden’s Tears.”
A roughly 20-minute hike along the walking trail behind the Shiretoko National Park Nature Center will bring you to an observatory. From there, besides the waterfall, you’ll get a view of the cliffs along the Sea of Okhotsk and the Shiretoko Mountain Range. Along the walking trail through the grasslands, you will see Shiretoko’s characteristic mixed coniferous-deciduous forest, and maybe even some of the wild birds and Ezo deer living there.
