Full-on mountain climbing awaits! The Shiretoko Mountain Range runs along the middle of the Shiretoko Peninsula.
There, you’ll find unique peaks like Mt. Rausu-dake, counted among the One Hundred Mountains Of Japan, and Mt. Io-zan, still alive and smoking.
Shiretoko has plenty of professional mountain guides to help you explore. Even if it’s your first time in the mountains of Shiretoko, joining a tour will help you have a deeper experience of the wilderness and ensure you don’t get lost while hiking.
In early summer, you’ll see a variety of flowers and alpine plants such as Aleutian avens (Geum pentapetalum), Aleutian mountain heath (Phyllodoce aleutica), and Shiretoko’s indigenous Shiretoko violets (Viola kitamiana).
