Pass through creeping pines (Pinus pumila), walk by ponds and marshes while taking in their alpine plants, and you’ll reach Sannonuma Marsh with Mt. Rausu-dake looming ahead in welcome. Continue on and you’ll get a spectacular view of Lake Rausu-ko, the largest lake in Shiretoko.
The scenery during the autumn foliage season is also wonderful, with the beautiful golden yellow of the Erman’s birch trees contrasting with the deep green of the creeping pines (Pinus pumila). Since you’ll be hiking in a highland area, you’ll need the same equipment and physical conditioning that would be needed for light trekking in the mountains. You may even want to join a tour to visit off-the-beaten-track destinations immersed in silence.
